Otitis
Externa (outer ear infection) |
Is an outer
ear infection always treated with ear
drops?
|
 |
An
outer ear infection is almost always
treated with ear drops that contain an
antibiotic. Once a doctor has evaluated
you or your child’s condition, the
doctor may decide that FLOXIN Otic or
FLOXIN Otic SINGLES should be used.
FLOXIN Otic or FLOXIN Otic SINGLES is
used to fight specific bacteria that can
cause outer ear infections. The ear drop
medicine is put in the ear where the
bacteria are living. With ear drops, the
body will not be unnecessarily exposed
to antibiotics. This is especially
important due to a problem called “antibiotic
resistance.”

How
to use FLOXIN Otic or FLOXIN Otic
SINGLES for an outer
ear infection
|
 |
Your
doctor will tell you how to administer
FLOXIN Otic or FLOXIN Otic SINGLES
for an outer ear
infection, but
we provide a brief overview here.
(Note:
Instructions for treating otitis externa (outer ear infections) and otitis
media (middle ear infections) are
different.) Please check patient
information for more complete
instructions.
| •
First, be sure to wash your
hands with soap and water. |
|
| •
Hold the bottle of FLOXIN
Otic in your hand for 1 or 2
minutes to warm the
solution. Ear drops that are
too cold will be
uncomfortable and may cause
dizziness. |
|
| •
The patient should lie down
with the infected ear
pointing upward. |
|
| •
The tip of the bottle should
not touch the fingers or the
ear or any other surface. |
|
| •
Administer the prescribed
number of drops. The usual
number of drops for a child
6 months to 13 years old is
5 drops, given once a day
for seven days. For patients
13 years and older, the
usual number of drops is 10,
also given once a day for
seven days. |
| •
The person who received the
medication should remain on
his/her side for at least 5
minutes.
Gently pull
the outer
ear upward
and backward
to allow the
medication
to flow down
into the ear
canal. |
| •
Give the drops once a day at
the same time every day. |
| •
First, be sure to wash your
hands with soap and water. |
|
| •
Hold the container of FLOXIN
Otic SINGLES in
your hand for
1
or 2 minutes to warm
the solution. If the
solution is too cold, it will
be uncomfortable and may
cause dizziness. |
|
| •
The patient should lie down
with the infected ear
pointing upward. |
|
| •
Tap container to make the
solution settle at the
bottom of the container.
Twist the container top to
open and discard top
immediately. Due to their
small size, the container
and top pose a danger of
choking to young children. |
|
| •
The tip of the container
should not touch the fingers
or the ear or any other
surface. |
|
| •
Administer the prescribed
number of SINGLES.
For patients
under 13 years of age, apply the contents of
1 SINGLES into the infected
ear. For
patients 13
years and older,
apply the contents of 2
SINGLES into the infected
ear. |

medication should remain on

Otitis
Media (middle ear infection) |
|
When is FLOXIN Otic or FLOXIN Otic
SINGLES used to treat a middle
ear infection?
|
 |
FLOXIN
Otic or FLOXIN Otic SINGLES contains an
antibiotic that kills specific bacteria
that cause certain types of middle ear
infections when there is a hole in the
eardrum. A patient with a middle ear
infection doesn’t always have a hole
in the eardrum. For ear drops to work in
a middle ear infection, there must be a
hole in the eardrum that will allow the
ear drops to enter into the middle ear.
There
are two common ways a hole can come
about in the eardrum. One way is for the
eardrum to tear naturally. The
infections may cause fluid to build up
in the middle ear so much that the
pressure actually causes the eardrum to
burst. Or, the eardrum may simply become
red and swollen and rip.
A
second way would be for a doctor to
create a hole in the eardrum with a
minor surgical procedure to place what
are called tympanostomy tubes. This
procedure allows fluid in the middle ear
to drain. While the placement of tubes
in a child’s ears should lower the
child’s chances of getting another
middle ear infection, it is not a sure
thing, and the child can still get a
middle ear infection requiring
treatment.

Administer
the prescribed number of
drops. For a child aged 1 to
12 years, the usual dose is
5 drops, given twice a day,
12 hours apart. For patients
12 years and older, the
usual dose of FLOXIN Otic is
10 drops, also given twice a
day, 12 hours apart. |
| After
you put the drops in the
ear, put your finger on the
bit of skin that extends
over the opening of the
outer ear (called the tragus),
and push it gently inward 4
times. This will help the
medicine get into the middle
ear. You or your child
should then lay still for 5
minutes with the infected
ear pointed toward the
ceiling to make sure the
drops have gone far enough
into the middle ear. |
| To
help make it easier to give
the drops twice a day and 12
hours apart, you may want to
give the medicine as part of
your child’s normal
routine. For example, give
the first drops in the
morning (around 8 AM), and
the second dose at night
(around 8 PM). |

While the person receiving
FLOXIN Otic SINGLES lies on
his/her side, the person
giving the medication should
gently press the TRAGUS
(the bit of
skin that

the opening

times in a pumping motion.
This will allow the drops to
